I'm catching a cold. I'm not happy about it. The weather has been so screwed up, my body doesn't quite know what to make of it. We've been having classic September weather all month. It's August and I should be sweating my balls off. Instead I've had to dig out a quilt, I'm shutting the window some nights and I'm thinking of wearing pants to work tomorrow. (Calm down. I wear shorts to work everyday.) Between the hectic weekend and the chilly weather, my body is feeling it. Ugh.
For the last five years or so, the subject of setting up wills and medical proxies has been coming up. This is something we need to do, but just never seem to get around to doing. It's not the most pleasant thing to think about, but it's something that needs to be done. Since we're sinful faggots who cannot legally marry in this state, we really have no legal rights in each other's lives. God forbid something happen to Ken, I'm sure his family will swoop in and have me shut out of health decisions and / or property. We finally have a call in to the lawyer and he says this is all very simple to put together. All we need to do is figure out if there are any specific things we would want to will to someone, who would be our executor should we both die at the same time and other things like that. It's really not as easy as I thought it would be. If I die first, naturally Ken gets everything. But who would get everything if we die together? And who do I trust enough to handle my estate? Ugh. Ken gave me a deadline of Saturday to get names and things in order. Wish me luck.

My parents decided that they were going to ask a trusted friend to be the executor if they were to both go at the same time. I thought that was a pretty good idea because it kept family out of it. It's a shame how crazy family gets when theres money involved.

Good luck with all that stuff. I can't believe in 2008 gays still have no legal rights to marry.
And I'm glad you clarified that you wear shorts to work....suddenly for a second there Frankenklinger seemed the MORE appropriately dressed one at your office, and that's never good!
Ugh...I don't envy you at all. We had to do that ourselves a few years ago when we got the kids. Once its done, it'll be a huge relief...so just bite the bullet and do it! :-)
Actually! You can go to Massachusetts darling, and this state will recognize you. Boom!
I don't know if Comic Boy and I are at that stage, but it's definitely out there now.
Weeell, if you lived on the fabulous West Coast, you could marry. But of course I believe this should be legal in all the states because marriage entails so much, not just in a spiritual sense but in a legal sense, it is truly a legal partnership that I feel everyone should have a right to. Don't forget to include DNRs in your will. Otherwise, anyone related to Ken could step in and put him on life support when that may be against his your your wishes. I have experience with this stuff. I was executor of my mother's will and relatives are bitches.
It really is ridiculous that you have to jump through so many hoops simply to have the same rights that other couples get by saying, "I do" and getting a legal piece of paper.
However, if you need to will something to a trusted friend should both you and Ken die at the same time, please know that I would be willing to take care of your estate. You still have some room on the credit cards, right?
I've been telling MyFella for a while that he has to start thinking about these things, because when we do elevate our relationship, we will have to elevate other situations as well. He never understood until this past week when his sister got stuck in a legal mess her recently divorced husband forgot to take care of - and he then dropped dead of a heart attack.
After that, MyFella said, "I understand now."
